Allen Dobrovolsky started his scientific career with PhD research into the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear fallout of 1986. The consulting firm he established in Australia received accreditation by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) in 2003. Allen has always been fascinated by the unique, natural beauty of the Australian environment, particularly, the Great Barrier Reef. Since 2014, he has been conducting a monitoring program in order to evaluate the changes in the water quality of this natural wonder of the world. Soon after, a team of independent filmmakers joined his expeditions. They had the opportunity to interview top coral and marine research scientists, along with locals, activists, politicians and indigenous leaders. Due to the multiple port developments that were contributing to the Reef's poor health, Allen's project gained momentum and the interest of the community. In February 2017, Dr Dobrovolsky established a film production company, AESA Films, in order to complete his documentary film about the Reef called Murder on the Reef (2018). In 2018-2019, the film was shown in 15 countries including Australia, China, Russia, the UK and USA, receiving 16 awards. This documentary is about nature - human nature - and its flawed tendency to put self-interest over the greater good. Above all, Murder on the Reef (2018) raises urgent questions about how we can turn the tide.
