Prominent Sikh political party, has started an agitation to save Punjab's water under riparian rights. This movement is led by Sant Bhindranwale, a religious leader. Due to the increased awareness of the sensitive issue - situation is being watched globally and India is being criticized internationally and domestically. The Congress government is preparing to teach a lesson to the Sikhs by putting a stop to this agitation. Preparations are made by conducting anti-Sikh propaganda with nearly two years of military drills. Meanwhile, several Hindus are killed anonymously in Punjab. State sponsored media propagates Sikhs for these killings. Military attacks the Sikh combatants inside Darbar Sahib. About hundred and fifty Sikhs combatants led by Sant Jarnail Singh are killed while fighting with army along with thousands of worshipers including elderly men, women, children and infants. The Akal Takht, highest political seat of the Sikhs, is demolished by tanks. Military attacks are carried out in 37 additional Gurdwaras across Punjab.
