Who Dares Wins (1996)

This series featured several stunts in which ordinary Australians were dared to do things they never thought they could, should or would do. Each episode would focus on one main dare, in the form of an elaborate stunt carried out under professional supervision, that would be attempted by an unsuspecting person ambushed by host Mike Whitney because they had been nominated by a friend, family member or work colleague to appear on the show, with much of the run time of the episode devoted to the contestant's training and preparation, witnessed by co-host Tania Zaetta. This main dare was bookended by several "street dares" in which Mike would travel to streets and shopping centres around Australia challenging people to complete tasks like getting all their hair shaved off or putting their hand into a container of cockroaches, with people who succeeded in these tasks winning A$50 cash. Sometimes, one slightly more complex stunt would be included, where Tania would approach people in the street or a shopping centre and take a person who accepted the challenge to another location to perform the stunt, like walking on a tightrope above a shopping centre foyer or diving into a pool fully clothed to retrieve a bag of cash at the bottom. A person who completed this stunt won A$200 cash. The climax of each episode would see Tania watch the nominated contestant performing the stunt they had been training for. If the contestant performed the stunt successfully, they would win a major prize, usually a holiday with spending money. If the contestant backed out or failed to complete the stunt, then Tania had to attempt the stunt herself, and if she succeeded, then the contestant lost the prize, but if Tania failed or backed out, the contestant would still win the prize. In the latter case, footage of the professionals who set the stunt up performing it successfully would be shown to prove that it was possible.
