Continuing where the original Dickens novel left off, Oliver is sent by Mr. Brownlow to a boarding school, where he re-encounters The Artful Dodger, who had been sent there as an alternative to being transported to Australia. Escaping from the headmaster's indifference and the school bully's cruelty, Oliver returns to London, only to find that Mr. Brownlow has become seriously ill, and is imprisoned by Brownlow's new housekeeper Mrs. Carraway and Oliver's old nemesis Noah Claypole. Learning of a plot by the evil Monks to destroy Oliver, Dodger follows Oliver back to London and rescues him, but both boys are forced to flee after being accused of theft. Mrs. Carraway and Claypole blackmail a doctor into keeping Brownlow drugged in order to steal Mr. Brownlow's money and Oliver's inheritance. Because the documents proving Oliver's identity had previously been stolen and hidden by Claypole and due to the false accusations, Oliver and Dodger are forced to go on the run back to the London slums they had escaped from...only to come face to face with their old friend Fagin, who had escaped hanging due to being struck down by paralysis. Now Oliver and Dodger must somehow prove their innocence and uncover the truth while trying to escape capture by both the police and old/new enemies.
