On the 1st February 1908, upon his return from a long stay in Vila Viçosa, King Carlos and Crown Prince Luís Filipe are murdered in Terreiro do Paço. Anarchists associated with the Carbonari, Alfredo Costa, Manuel Buiça, among others, practically eliminate the Portuguese monarchy in a single coup. The extreme violence of this act leaves the Portuguese society discontent and the tension between the Monarchists and the Republicans reaches its climax. This series gives a portrait of the time of tremendous social unrest right before the regicide and of its repercussions and commotion, which in the end inevitably changed the Portuguese political regime.
