During the Golden Age of Piracy, the Caribbean wasn't the only place where sea-borne picaroons thrived. Beginning in 1635, border conflicts between the Maryland and Virginia colonies gave rise to a new branch of piracy. Soon buccaneers who sailed southern waters in winter learned that the traders sailing on the Chesapeake Bay during the summer months were lucrative targets. For nearly 75 years, their deprivations made life a misery for merchants until Governor Alexander Spottswood's efforts turned the tide against the brigands.
