On the night of 14-15 July 2021, the river in the Ahr Valley in western Germany experienced spectacular flooding, with the water level rising by over 7 meters. The floodwaters swept away cars and houses and caused the death of 135 people. Olivier Grieß was torn from his home by the raging waters after seeing the town's bridge give way.
