The story centers on the relationship between JEN, a young working-class black woman, and PENNY, a young white woman from a good family who dreams of traveling the world. Jen, who makes a living writing penny dreadfuls in London under a male pseudonym, has come to the small town to finish her novel. She forms a friendship with Penny whose parents are pushing her to get married. Despite their differences in class, race, and personality- Jen is down to earth and hardworking while Penny is idealistic and naive- they find common ground in their dreams of a different life. Everything changes one afternoon when Jen kisses Penny. At first shocked and disgusted Penny eventually admits her attraction to Jen, even considering turning down a proposal from a rich man that would allow her to travel the world. But when Jen's novel is rejected her station in life as a queer black woman is brought into sharp relief, forcing them to question if Penny, a wealthy white woman who has lived a sheltered life, could ever truly understand and commit to the reality of the life they would have to lead. A near-death experience where Jen and Penny nearly drown leads the pair to come to terms with their feelings and the kind of life they can have together, one of secrecy and struggle but ultimately one filled with love. The film explores themes of sexuality, race, wealth, and the limitations and conditionality of love.
