In the tight-knit North Shore community of Shoreham-Wading River, a sun-soaked street runs along the coast of the Long Island Sound. A row of beachfront homes and bungalows borders its north, with lush wetlands to its south. Visitors are beckoned to Creek Road by public beach access, with a few sandy parking lots. On sunny days in all seasons, neighbors stroll along the sand with their dogs. Boaters navigate the swift currents of a narrow inlet to head out to fish on the Sound, and warm summer days bring children out to wade in the water. Behind it all sits a hulking structure, a relic of one of the most divisive flashpoints in Long Island history -- the Shoreham nuclear power plant.
