South Africa 1948 and struggle icon Ronnie Kasrils is just 11 when he witnesses the brutal murder of a black man. Like his comic book hero GI Joe, he dreams of saving the world from evil but instead, big trouble finds Ronnie - his best friend's father is a Nazi, he falls in love with the black, adopted daughter of the communist neighbours, and the racist killer lives a few houses down.
