Isis is a stoic nurse who takes care of Tomas, the heir of an ancient noble family. He treats Isis like a daughter. But when he claims to be haunted by ghosts, he brings jealousy and suspicion to Sebastian, his son, a modern man who loathes the ancient traditions that his father cherishes so much. Tomas thinks he may be losing his mind, so he asks to be committed to a mental facility. Sebastian, who depends on Tomas' connections with the Brazilian economic elite, disagrees with his father. Moara, the maid, a practitioner of Afro-Brazilian religion Umbanda, believes that supernatural forces are operating through Isis. The nurse seems to be a latent psychic that has woken up what lies in the old manor. But Tomas, a strict catholic, denies Moara's help. Francisco, Tomas' neighbor, unveils a mystery from the past that connects Isis and Tomas with the forces that run in the house. The sexual heat between Sebastian and Isis, the conflicting relationship between father and son, the suicide of Marilia, Tomas' wife, and the presence of Catarina, Isis' mother, who left her in a shelter when Isis was a child, are explosive elements that add layers to this movie. The horror dances in the edge between reality and the supernatural, revealing the dusty skeletons of the Brazilian aristocracy in a visual extravaganza inspired by the Brazilian Modern Art Week of 1922.
