This collective video work presents the creations of twenty-five of today's international leading contemporary visual artists, all of whom have created a one-minute video in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic currently inflicting Africa. Each artist has used only non-documentary techniques to convey the message of the 46664 campaign through the universal language of art. Hopefully the metaphors that the artists employ reach across cultural and religious barriers to touch the hearts and engage the minds around the world. 46664 was the prison number of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, Cape Town, where he was held in captivity for 18 years. He was the 466th prisoner to be incarcerated on the island in 1964. In November 2002, Mr. Mandela gave his prison number 46664 to David A. Stewart of Eurythmics so that he could use it to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa by raising money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Works from this video compilation were first shown on November 29, 2003, in the intervals between the performances of the musicians at "46664 - The Concert" which was held at Green Point Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa. The one-minute videos are also featured on the South African release of the specially commissioned Nelson Mandela Foundation's "46664 - The Concert" Double DVD (2004).
