Around 15,000 elite soldiers had been lured into an ambush on the way back from the summer camp in 9 AD and were almost completely destroyed by the allied Germanic tribes under the leadership of Arminius the Cherusci. How could the well-equipped and trained legions of Rome be subjected so clearly by a savage band of barbarians?
