In 1904, B. F. Pinkerton, a U.S. Navy officer aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, takes a house on a hill in Nagasaki, Japan, for himself and his fiancee, the fifteen-year-old Cio-Cio-San, nicknamed Butterfly.
