Late Night Swim (2020)

Sam is a kind man who tries to do the right thing. He's a real estate agent working hard to pay the bills. He has a beautiful wife. Yet he's indecisive and rushes through life, never being fully present and never being fully happy. The film opens in a dream: A woman is swimming away from us, then suddenly turns and beckons someone toward her. Sam wakes up and rushes to get ready for work. His wife, wants to talk to him, but he's in a hurry. When he opens his car door, he's shocked to find the woman from his dream sitting in the driver's seat. It's his ex-girlfriend, Veronica-now a famous singer- in all her vibrant, vivacious glory. Veronica wants Sam back. Afraid that his wife will find them, Sam drives off in a panic, and a conversation ensues. Veronica has a way of appearing and disappearing in this film that combines magical realism with comedy and heartfelt truth. The next day Sam is preparing an empty house in the desert for a showing, and he finds Veronica swimming in the pool, just like his dream. Sam grapples with what is real, and his own inability to accept the love around him. Is Veronica real, or is she an image of what could be, of what is? Does Sam have the courage to live fully in his choices, or will he be haunted by what never is now?
