The joik has an unbroken tradition for thousands of years. It is the music of the people, a music for reindeer herders and fishermen. But it is not uncontested. The joik has been subjected to the death penalty because it was regarded as the music of witchcraft and sorcery. What is the reason that over the years the music has survived both Christian missionaries and the authorities? Through the history of the joik we get the story of the Sámi.
