A murder in a small country town in 1958. The proprietor of the local hotel is beaten to death and robbed. SERGEANT O'BRIEN interviews two suspects, best friends. BILL was an employee at the hotel and the last person to see the victim alive. TONY, the archetypal outsider, was the last customer in the pub. Through a series of flashbacks, the events of the previous day come to light, and more than a few secrets. Bill reveals that Tony had lost the last of his money on a horse race, giving him a motive for the robbery. He also reveals an uncertainty over his upcoming marriage to ISABELLA. Tony refuses to answer any questions about his whereabouts at the time of the murder. His flashback explains why: he was in the arms of Bill's fiancee. He cannot provide an alibi without ruining the lives of the woman he loves and the only friend he has ever had. Nonetheless, Tony pleads his innocence with O'Brien, who remarks that Bill is no longer a suspect as he has an alibi: Bill claims he was with Isabella, and she has corroborated his story. Tony realises he has been framed for the murder. He knows it is now his word against theirs. Resigned to his fate, he accepts his fate. Narrating from beyond the grave, Tony speaks of his only sin, and we are left with a final, haunting image.
