The Home Movies of Dr. John Parrott (2016)

Appalshop Archive was awarded a grant by the National Film Preservation Foundation to preserve Coal Camp: Life Below the Tipple (1972, color), a never-released Appalshop film by Ben Zickafoose documenting life in Harlan County's Brookside coal camp, and amateur films from Bell County, KY provided by Historian Tim Cornett with the assistance of William S. Tribell. These included a silent 1938 film documenting of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pine Mountain Resort State Park and seven color 16mm home movies made by Pineville Kentucky resident Dr. John Parrott in the 1940's and 50's. This short film, directed and produced by Appalshop Film Archivist Caroline Rubens was made from clips from Parrott's reels with music composed by Robert Andrew Scott. The film debuted in 2016 at the Appalshop Theatre, as part of their 30th Annual Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival, and Appalshop's 40th Anniversary. It was also featured at at EXTREME Appalachia: 40th Annual Appalachian Studies Conference at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.
