As this film is from 1973, the violence can still be gritty but familiar and cheesy, depending on how you look at it.
The opening sequence shows Pat Garrett and two more men repeatedly shot, bullet wounds and blood are show. This sequence is intercut with scenes set several years prior, with Billy the Kid and his gang shooting at live chickens buried up to their necks in the ground. Several graphic shots show live chickens having their heads shot off. Bloody twitching stumps still buried in the ground and blown-off chicken heads are shown.
Pat Garrett and his posse ambush the house where Billy the Kid and two of his men are, there is a shoot out and both of Billy's men are killed including one being shot in the neck, bullet wound and blood shown. Several of Garrett's men are also killed.
While in jail Billy has the chair kicked out from under him and then held by the hair and threatened with a rifle and then thrown back to the floor.
To escape jail Billy shoots a man in the back and he crashes through a door, Billy shoots another man and there is a large bullet wound and a big splatter of blood as the bullet exits through his back. While lying on the ground Billy shoots him again in the chest, bullet wounds and blood seen.
Billy and his gang shoot three men repeatedly, one man also has a knife thrown into his neck.
There is a sequence depicting a cock fight, this is real and live cocks were obviously used. The scene is shown in slow motion as the cocks fight, peck and bite each other.
Pat Garrett has a shoot out with some of Billy's old gang where he shoots and kills several of them, one in the leg. His deputy is shot several times, blood and bullet wounds seen.
One of Billy's gang is surrounded by Chisum's men and they shoot his horse which slumps to the ground, he then stands up and they repeatedly shoot him.
Billy and his friend then start to shoot them and manage to kill several, this sequence also includes a graphic head first horse fall.
A man is shot in the chest.
Pat Garrett forces a man to hit his friend around the back of his head with the butt of a shotgun.
A man is shot.
One man is puched around the face as is another and they are both knocked out.
A gang of men have attacked a wagon, they are whipping the driver whose shirt is blood stained and one guy is trying to rape a woman, he forcibly rips her top open and repeatedly slaps her across the face. Billy rides along and shoots all the men, bullet wounds and blood seen.
A man is hit and knocked out with the butt of a handgun.
Pat Garrett shoots Billy the Kid, no bullet wound or blood shown.
Garrett hits a man over the back of his head with the butt of his gun and then kicks him in the face.
The film finishes with the scene with which it started as Garrett is shot repeatedly.
