In early 20th-century rural Bengal, Apu is born into a struggling Brahmin family. His father, Harihar, is a priest and aspiring poet, but his dreams of success are constantly thwarted by poverty. His wife, Sarbojaya, is left to manage their home and children, Durga and Apu, while caring for elderly Aunt Indir. As Harihar leaves in search of work, Sarbojaya bears the weight of their hardships alone, often enduring the scorn of neighbors.
