Woman in the Dunes (1964)

An entomologist on an expedition to a remote coastal village becomes trapped in a pit with a woman whose life revolves around shoveling sand to prevent her home from being buried. Initially, the man is led to believe that he's staying temporarily, but when the rope ladder vanishes, he realizes he’s a prisoner. Forced to help the woman with her endless task, he tries to escape. Over time, they develop a strange relationship, as his hopes of freedom fade.
