Maud de Rouvre is an idle socialite accustomed to luxury and to lust. Now that she is highly indebted, she contemplates marriage. And why not with Maxime de Chantel, a country squire, rich of course and in love with her into the bargain. But it is not to the liking of Julien, her lover, who is not ready to share her with Chantel.
