Safariland (1952)

The film depicts a journey to East Africa. Via Bromma Airport, the travel company - after a short stay in Geneva - goes to Nice, where one observes a procession of women in flower-decorated carriages. One travels on to Monte Carlo where one witnesses the castle and the gambling bank. In Rome the Pope blesses the crowd and in Athens you witness the Acropolis and Syntagma Square. From there you fly over the Nile and land in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Life in Nairobi is depicted and a Norwegian farm is visited before the travel company ventures into the country to depict the local people's lifestyle. You visit the Maasai, who are initially hostile to the film crew, but then become increasingly friendly. According to the narrator, the Masai are the wildest warrior tribe in East Africa, but are now dying out due to venereal diseases. The film also documents the country's wildlife, including monkeys, gazelles, giraffes, hyenas and lions. The journey continues to the port city of Mombasa. The town is famous among Norwegian sailors, and we see the harbor with its picturesque sailing ships and sailors. Down on the coast the natives go practically without clothes. Africa's mystery and charm can be experienced in the mourning dance, where the natives have smeared themselves with coral flour and ash and are decorated with feather clothing. To the rhythm of the jungle drums, the sword dance begins.
