In 1994 Long Beach, California, Erin Gruwell takes on her first teaching job as an English teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School. Unaware of the challenges ahead, Erin encounters a racially divided and gang-ridden classroom. Facing resistance from both students and colleagues, she introduces a journaling assignment to encourage self-expression. As Erin strives to provide resources for her students, she battles against the school's ingrained problems and bureaucratic obstacles.
