Marcie Cutler and her associate Stanley Deluca are the forensic scientists with the Chicago Police Department - they're civilian positions - but it is well known in the department that Marcie has aspirations to become a police detective following in the footsteps of her now retired father, Mike Cutler. Such a move would not sit well with Mike. The latest case on which Marcie and Stanley are working is the shooting death of Ray Stone, the case led by partnered Detectives Gus Sutton and Lisa Grant. Ray is not only a known lowlife within the drug world, but was also one of Lisa's trusted informants. While Lisa was mentored by Mike who would trust his life in her hands, Gus is an unknown quantity having transferred from the San Francisco Police Department. Despite Lisa's reputation, she is also known to be going through some problems which may be affecting her work, including her husband having recently died, and known within some circles that she now has a drinking problem probably due to the emotional stress. Because of Marcie's pedigree as Mike's daughter and because of her high standing within her detective class, Lieutenant Donna Sinclair, off the record, asks Marcie to look into her detectives clandestinely as she believes one of them has gone dirty as Ray was found with cocaine that was pilfered from police evidence. Marcie decides to take an unconventional and thus potentially dangerous tact in this unofficial job. To prove herself as a good detective, Marcie may have to learn to look deeper than what appears on the surface, which includes more problems that Lisa seems to be hiding, and Marcie and Gus' own mutual attraction to each other.
