National Theatre Live: Frankenstein (2011)

In the opening scenes, the Creature (Jonny Lee Miller or Benedict Cumberbatch) is shown wearing a loin cloth. He wears this loin cloth and later, a red cloak for about the first fifteen minutes before being seen in gray ragged clothes.

A man kisses his wife passionately on the lips. She later reveals that she is pregnant.

In one scene, Elizabeth (Naomi Harris) kisses Victor Frankenstein (Jonny Lee Miller or Benedict Cumberbatch) on the lips and she discusses her desire to have children with him.

An actress wearing what appears to be a flesh colored moleskin represents the female version of the Creature. Bare breasts are visible along with the crotch area.

Frankenstein in mocking the Creature's ideas of how the female creature will accept only him, caresses the female creature, kisses her briefly and touches her breasts in order to show how a man may be attracted to her just as well as the Creature is.

Villagers yell and scream when they see the Creature for the first time. In several scenes, men beat the Creature with sticks. No blood is shown.

The Creature burns a house and it is implied that the occupants are killed.

Frankenstein destroys the unfinished female Creature. This is only seen in silhouette but it may be upsetting to some, especially with the dramatic music that plays during the scene. The female creature is later shown lying on the stage with blood on its chest before it is covered by a sheet.

Two instances of "Bugger off!" and "Piss off!"

Several exclamations of "Jesus Christ!" or "Holy Chirst!"

Men drink alcohol around a fire.

The Creature offers Frankenstein wine in one scene.

The overall feel of the movie is very dark, both in terms of lighting and plot. The opening scenes may be unsettling to some as the Creature is "born" from a large sack. From there, the audience is essentially watching a 30-something year old man learn to use his limbs, walk and react to the world around him, much like a toddler would. This concept coupled with the length of the scene may be unsettling to some.

Due to the instances of murder, rape and death, the film would most likely be given an "R" rating.
