Chai (2009)

'Chai', which means 'to demolish' in Chinese, follows refuse collector Cao Yu Hua as he cycles around his neighborhood selling the debris of his home. Shot in Shanghai in late 2009 it is a film about change and uncertainty. Both the city and Cao's own life are undergoing massive change as the old and familiar are swept away in favor of modernity. The streets and community that Cao has long called home are fast becoming the shining new boulevards of an emerging superpower. And as the bulldozers creep ever closer to his home, Cao is left to to ponder his future.
