Student protests in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in June 1989 started peacefully. Calls for democracy and a more open and gentle society found sympathy in the hearts of many of the soldiers sent to control the demonstrations. But orders from higher up resulted in a violent crackdown on the protestors. A day later, a man carrying two shopping bags crossed onto a road and waited for a column of tanks to approach him. In doing so, he created one of the twentieth century's most moving images, an icon of dissent. His identity remains unknown to this day.
