David Lazzaretti is still regarded today as the prophet of Mount Amiata, in Tuscany. His actions were always turned towards the humble ones, to their social revenge, to economic and cultural redemption. His vision of the community, of justice, of religion, went beyond utopia, back to the origins of Christianity. The peasants that followed him, put all their belongings together for the construction of a community: the Society of Christian Families. It was characterized by the possibility of participating in public and religious life by women, by the guarantee of instruction and assistance to all. Way ahead of his times, David Lazzaretti was deemed dangerous by lay and religious institutions. He was persecuted by the State and his works were put on the Index by Vatican Church. His deeds were interrupted with the slaughter of August 18, 1878.
