His crime goes beyond all imagination. Joseph Komalschek has to serve a 30-year prison sentence for the cruel killing of a young mother and her baby. He never admitted his guilt, and the bodies never turned up either. After his release, he returns to his hometown, where he is met with suspicion and contempt. Former police officer Klaus Barner, who once arrested the suspected double murderer, is particularly unhappy about the return of the "monster". A strange game of cat and mouse begins between Komalschek and the retired officer, in which Barner's son Tom also plays a significant role. In this profound psychological thriller, Götz George, as a one-legged troublemaker, terrifies an entire town. The visually impressive thriller links the underground labyrinth of a disused mine with the opaque machinations of self-righteous ex-police officers. Joseph Komalschek (Götz George) spent 30 years behind bars. The reason: particularly serious guilt. The court considered it proven that the habitual criminal murdered his neighbor and her newborn child with merciless brutality. However, the accused never confessed to the crime. Ironically, the bodies were never found either. Now the return of the "beast" has thrown his home town, the scene of the crime, into a state of excitement. The young police officer Tom Barner (Hanno Koffler) and his colleagues observe the ex-convict, who is classified as dangerous, around the clock. The effort is enormous. Nevertheless, the old man, who only has one leg after a shooting, is able to escape his guards again and again. His path leads him deep underground, where he wants to bring the truth to light in a disused mine. Tom's father Klaus (Manfred Zapatka) and his retired colleagues Heinz Braun (Thomas Thieme) and Fritz Reet (Hans-Martin Stier), who were responsible for Komalschek's conviction at the time, are getting nervous. A question has also stuck in Tom's head that can no longer be ignored.
