A sculptor adhering to opposition views, not without a share of talent, experiences a midlife crisis. He hopes for the opening in the West of his magnificent monument: "Stepan Razin in chains." By this, he expresses a mental protest against the regime, the authorities and the unjust society. However, weakness and life contradictions - with his wife, mistress and colleagues, do not allow him to concentrate and decide what is more important for him: political struggle, creativity in a foreign land or a modest, quiet, but free life.
