Not knowing the other beyond the general categorization of each other as the black dude and the white kid, respectively, Gabe and Alec routinely see each other when they go for their individual therapy sessions in the same building every Wednesday, Alec always accompanied by his grandmother. Early thirty-something personal trainer Gabe has only been in therapy for a few months in the aftermath of his latest "temporary break" with Millie, who he thinks he loves, with their relationship problems seemingly stemming from societal expectations most specifically of marriage and kids - the forevers - for Gabe regardless of it is with Millie or anyone else. Conversely, he has jealousy issues in he believing he being compared to one of his clients, famous rock guitarist Patrick Nelson, who was referred to him by Millie in Pat being her ex-fiancé. Nine year old Alec, on the other hand, has been in therapy for two years for his anti-social behavior, including locking himself in his bedroom when at home in he believing his parents not understanding him, with a known but one that is solely classified as kids will be kids that will eventual resolve itself being that he is routinely bullied at school by three other kids. Not knowing the significant issue that happened in Alec's life that day, Gabe sees him alone outside the office on one of those Wednesdays. With Alec stating that his elderly grandmother forgot to pick him up and that he has no way of contacting her, Gabe offers him a ride home wherever home is. Their extended drive back to Alec's place with multiple detours ends up being one long therapy session for both, for Gabe as they encounter Millie, Pat and former two-night stand Bailey, a therapy session that has more revealing moments than their regular Wednesdays in things happening in real time.
