A destitute cavaleiro fidalgo, Paullo, delivers Isabela, a young girl kidnapped from the rebellious territory of the Azores, to the care of Dom Afonso. Afonso is a member of the Cortes who supported the claim of Philip II of Spain to the Portuguese throne. He is zealously loyal to Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the Duke of Alba and Constable of Portugal, and plans to deliver Isabela to him.
