'I can't breathe.' That's what Eric Garner said eleven times as he was dying on a pavement in New York City during an arrest in 2014. The harrowing scene was filmed, shared and watched by millions of people all over the world, and his last words created an eerie soundtrack for the images where a police officer is clearly seen with an arm around Garner's throat. No charges were ever pressed against the officer - the reasoning being that there was not enough evidence, and the case was dismissed. But justice must be done, and it wasn't done here according to a group of lawyers and filmmakers, who in 2018 staged a large imitation trial, which recreated the process in court as it should have happened. 'The Color of Justice' gives us a unique and nuanced insight into the case of Eric Garner. We follow both the defendants and the prosecutors in their pursuit of justice, and meet policemen, witnesses and Garner's widow in a film which hits home squarely in a time of police brutality and Black Lives Matter.
