David Alberg serves as the Sanctuary Superintendent for the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. The Monitor Sanctuary was the first national marine sanctuary established in the United States and is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. The sanctuary is located off the coast of North Carolina and protects the Civil War ironclad U.S.S. Monitor. As Superintendent, Mr. Alberg provides daily oversight for the sanctuary and oversees the long-term preservation of the wreck site and the artifacts that have been recovered from the ship. Mr. Alberg is also heavily involved in policy development, education and public outreach to heighten public awareness and protection of our submerged cultural resources. He has an extensive background in cultural resource management, museum work and exhibit development and has been involved in a number of high-profile museum projects. In 1992, Mr. Alberg began his career as the first curator for the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia, and went on to serve as the Director of Exhibits and Collections for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Between 2001-2005, he served as the Deputy Director for Nauticus, The National Maritime Center in Norfolk, Virginia. During his career, he has been involved in the development of a curation strategy for the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in conjunction with the Department of Energy and also led an effort to preserve the Apollo One spacecraft that was involved in the 1967 fire that took the lives of astronauts Virgil I. Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffe. Alberg also served as the U.S. government representative on the 2010 joint expedition to the shipwreck of RMS Titanic. Preserving our nation's history has always been a passion for Mr. Alberg. Mr. Alberg holds a bachelor's degree in museum studies from George Mason University and a master's degree in museum education from the College of William and Mary. In 2017, Alberg was appointed as a Board Member of the Maryland Historical Trust by Maryland Governor Larry J. Hogan. Mr. Alberg served 21 years in the United States Navy Reserve.
