The Broadway Melody

Hank and Queenie Mahoney, a vaudeville act, come to Broadway, where their friend Eddie Kerns needs them for his number in one of Francis Zanfield's shows. Eddie was in love with Hank, but when he meets Queenie, he falls in love to her, but she is courted by Jock Warriner, a member of the New Yorker high society. It takes a while till Queenie recognizes, that she is for Jock nothing more than a toy, and it also takes a while till Hank recognizes that Eddie is in love with Queenie.

Bob Gordon is staging a new Broadway Show, but he is short of money. He gets an offer of money by the young widow Lillian, if she can dance in his new show. Bert Keeler, a newspaper man, gets this information and is writing about this in his column in an slightly unfriendly way. Gordon's old class mate Irene Forster, a tap dancer from Albany also tries to get the leading role in this show, but Lillian insists in getting this part herself. So Irene Forster, Bert Keeler and Gordon's secretary Kitty start a little game to get Irene the leading role.

Steve Raleigh wants to produce a show on Broadway. He finds a backer, Herman Whipple and a leading lady, Sally Lee, however his wife Caroline Whipple forces Steve to use a known star, not a newcomer. Sally purchases a horse she used to train when her parents had a farm before the depression and with two ex-vaudevillians, Sonny Ledford and Peter Trott she trains it to win a race, providing the money Steve needs for his show.

Hoofers Johnny Brett and King Shaw have been trying to make it in New York. Befuddled producer Bob Casey wants a new partner for star Clare Bennett, but Brett thinks the caller is a bill collector and in a panic says that he is King Shaw. Because of this casting mixup, the wrong man gets a major role in a Broadway show. It looks as if Johnny, who deserves the part and who is falling for Clare while she is also falling for him, has lost his shot at stardom. Then King, the new leading man, gets drunk on opening night and someone else has to take his place... Includes numerous dance routines and Cole Porter songs, with the classic "Begin the Beguine."
