Based on Paolo Villaggio's books "Fantozzi" and "Il secondo, tragico Fantozzi", which are popular in Italy, this film tells the story of an unfortunate accountant's life over the course of one year, shown in a variety of sketches, segments, and provocative sequences presenting Fantozzi as a very unlucky person indeed.

After a hard day at work and a condominium-board meeting, accountant Ugo Fantozzi goes on a trip with his family. Unfortunately, he will face a nasty surprise upon his return.

The accountant Ugo Fantozzi is a born loser: for him the problems of the office and everyday life becomes huge catastrophes.

After 30 years in the big corporation, Ugo Fantozzi retires. Suddenly he needs things to do in everyday life and he tries a number of activities: helping Pina with her shopping, babysitting granddaughter Uga, traveling to Venice, and learning golf. He then fakes documents to get a new job, but he becomes a hypochondriac and doesn't even take a long-awaited chance with Miss Silvani.

One by one, Ugo's colleagues have been leaving this life to go to a better one. While Ugo is attending one of the many funerals, he and the priest are involved in an accident, and the doctor announces that Ugo has only one week left to live.

Ugo Fantozzi has been ejected from Heaven and is sent back to Earth for a short period of time until the staff in Heaven can find him a place. Fantozzi goes through a variety of unfortunate experiences, such as rescuing his retro-punk granddaughter Uga and needing to pay a huge telephone bill full of chat-line conversations. He gets arrested instead of his ex-boss, who was originally charged with corruption. Just as he's about to enjoy the World Cup Final with Italy, he's called back to Heaven. Will he ever find peace?
