Maria Clara "Klay" Infantes is a modern-day nursing student who aspires to graduate soon and work abroad. Despite this, she finds it unnecessary to learn politics while becoming a nurse. She eventually gets into trouble with her Rizal Studies professor, José R. Torres, after sleeping during his class and plagiarizing a book review of Noli Me Tángere. Torres gives her a chance by handing her his copy of the novel, saying that she will learn more with it because it will "bring her into the world of José Rizal's novels." After falling asleep while reading the novel, she wakes up to find herself inside the room of Maria Clara, one of the novel's characters, and later runs into Crisostomo Ibarra, Noli Me Tángere's protagonist. Unable to return to the present without completing the story, Klay must now adapt to the people and her environment in order to exit the novel as soon as possible - all while becoming entangled with the characters' lives and learning about history through her interactions with them.
