In advance of 2023's 80th anniversary since its commencement, this event mini-series tells the rarely televised and often overlooked story of World War II's Italian Campaign. From the shores of Sicily to the heights of the Apennine Mountains, Eyewitness WWII: Invasion Italy captures the stories of those who experienced the harrowing two-year campaign first-hand and highlights the importance that hard-fought battles in Italy and the Mediterranean played in the ultimate outcome of the war. Produced from 100 per cent colour archival footage, much of which has never been seen before, and featuring narration drawn from the voices of wartime leaders and soldiers, captured at the time in interviews, testimonials and diaries, the series provides incredible eyewitness accounts and poignant personal viewpoints to key events in the brutal campaign. These include the initial invasion of Sicily, which forced the German army to retreat to the mainland and the bloody Battle of Anzio, which eventually led to the Allies capturing Rome.
