Amy Winslow, a crime fiction specialist and the daughter of Graham Winslow, the author of the famed Atticus Keller series of crime mystery novels, has just taken over as Head of the Literature Department at Elmstead College in small town Garrison, Washington, the college where Graham is Professor Emeritus. In Amy discovering that crime fiction has its roots in real life, she gets involved in certain criminal cases in Garrison. Amy's involvement does not initially sit well with Garrison PD's Detective Travis Burke, a recent arrival having spent most of his career with the Chicago PD. He takes issue not only with non-requested civilian involvement, but in not believing in the real life roots of crime fiction. Things start to change between Travis and Amy not only in Travis discovering Amy's innate knowledge of crime and thus her invaluable assistance, but as the two start to fall for each other.
