In the early 1980s, the struggle for power gathered momentum in the party elite of the USSR. Leonid Brezhnev's declining health and total corruption forced the power structures to choose among the potential courses of the union. Ordinary people found themselves drawn into a merciless conflict between two departments, the KGB (Soviet state security) and the MVD (Russian internal affairs), for power.
