The story centers around an air-headed crybaby, named Usagi, and her friends Ami, Rei, Makato, and Minako. Using special powers, they can transform into Sailor Solders. They become Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus respectfully. They fight for love and justice against the evil minions of The Dark Kingdom. To help them in their quest, they heed the advice of two talking cats, Luna and Artemis, and also the mysterious Tuxedo Mask.

In one of the first episodes, Umino tries to act cool, so he flaps his teachers skirt, exposing her panties. This is for a brief moment, but it is later mentioned.

In the VIZ dub version, Umino mentions a time of year where couples "get it on." A pretty clear innuendo.

Almost all of the female villains wear very revealing clothing that shows cleavage. In the VIZ dub version, there is a female villain who is naked from the waist up, with only star pasties covering her nipples.

In the VIZ dub version, Sailor Jupiter makes comments about her breasts, saying that her chest size is bigger than everyone else's .

In the VIZ dub version, when Usagi is changing a male baby's diaper, there is a scene where the child's groin area is entirely exposed to the camera.

In the VIZ dub version, Sailor Venus makes comments about stripping naked and having her portrait painted by her boyfriend. She makes a kissy face at the camera and reiterates this, saying: "You know, like without any clothes on."

Chibi Moon makes several flirtatious and incestuous comments to her father, and wants to be his girlfriend.

There is a group of villains who pick their targets based on who they have romantic interest in. One of the villains chooses a young child, and the other villains remark that the child is too young, which that villain who chose the kid dismisses.

In the VIZ dub version, there generally are a lot of innuendos and sexual comments that are not kid friendly. The comments come and go in brief incidents, but they can be pretty dirty.

In both the VIZ and Japanese version, during one transformation sequence, there are shots of a little girl's buttocks and breasts grow. She is fully nude but her skin is pitch black.

-In the Japanese version, there are some moments (mostly in dialogue) of mild adult humor that are solely made to be funny but might confuse younger children; most of these have been cut in the English version.

-In the Japanese version, there are two pairs of romantic couples that are the same sex; in the English version, however, these have been changed by either changing the gender of one of the characters or changing the relationship between the two. (ex: Amara and Michelle being cousins)

-In both versions, during their transformations into Senshi(Scouts), the protagonists are briefly shown naked but are covered by a glowing aura as they transform. No graphic nudity is shown at any point in the show.

-In both versions, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask are shown to be in a relationship throughout the entire series. They occasionally kiss each other on screen.
