Several scenes involving dead animals, some hanging dead in market stalls (chickens, geese, severed pig heads, animal entrails, blood) or in the kitchen (dead chickens), and a particularly disturbing scene (repeated) of a child smeared with blood playing with a canary they'd just killed (neck broken). The child is also taught to hunt, and has pheasant blood intentionally painted on their face in order to distress their mother.
Physically and verbally abusive alcoholic frequently screams at a woman, ordering her like she's a dog, yelling at her in a drunken temper or petulance. He's also seen to slap, punch, and bite her. Various attempts are made to rape her, and rape and violent consensual sex are implied.
A child is shown poking a crow. He is stabbing it to death with a stick (not shown) and is stopped by an adult. The bird has to be killed out of mercy.
A child throws up after being forced to drink alcohol. It is shown.
A man is being treated for an unspecified disease (most likely tuberculosis/consumption) and is treated with leeches. This is shown in one scene. No blood, but this may still be unsettling for some viewers.
