The 12-year-old Edda loses her parents, one of her hands and the ability to walk in a tragic car accident. At the hospital, she learns that she will have to go live with her nervous uncle Robin and his angry wife, Iris whom run the local bakery in a small community. Edda begins to keep a diary, which she names "Handbook for handless" after reading a manual for her new prosthetic hand. Robin and Iris, misinterpret Edda silence and mourning for her losses and believe her to be both deaf, mute and mentally handicapped. Soon however, Eddas quiet life changes, when 19-year-old Hampus, delivering bread to the local nursing home shows up. Hampus begins to confide to Edda and there is a mutual interest between them. But not all is as it seems in the small idyllic community.
