Thora Parker (Thora Hird) is the landlady of a North Country boarding house that predominantly caters for showbiz types. Everything must be in place, she is always precise. She oversees the comings and goings of her boarders while caring for her two children, Alan and Vera as well as her mother. but she can't stop her neighbour, Elsie, from borrowing anything that isn't nailed down!
