The Towers (2018)

Retired soldier The 8th Earl Wansbeck is a difficult man. Reluctant Lord, decorated veteran and aspiring thespian. "The Major" has reached middle age and is dis-satisfied with his lot in life. His money, his friends and his youth are gone. He now ekes out a living as a would - be actor, and occasionally (and reluctantly) sitting in the House Of Lords, an institution he was ambivalently born into. The only remaining people who will give this pugnacious man the time of day are Hon Montgomery Faversham, a fellow Peer, Lady Pamela Pilkington, a young woman who spent her lonely childhood as The Major's neighbour before his country house in the north crumbled, and Countess Lydia Arbuthnot, a complicated young woman, Lady Pam's best friend since childhood, who spends her days stealing high value objects from her fellow rich and well heeled, and indulging her love of food. Lydia is relentlessly slim despite her food intake, whereas Pam undergoes a succession of diets. Both young women have distant fathers, and remembering The Major in his happier days, think of him as something of a father figure, something he is completely oblivious to, despite promising Lydia's gin soaked mother Cicely he would look out for her kleptomaniac daughter. Little does the disgruntled lord realise that it is these sometimes strained friendships that make his otherwise empty life worth living.
