A winter's night in 1840 in a small village in Finland. Colonel Toll is old and is awaiting the end of his days. In his living room he tells his young housekeeper Maria about 'Galgemanden', a small talisman cut from old gallows wood. It can never be given away by its owner - only sold. And it must be sold at a lower price than the last time or the owner will suffer eternal damnation. The colonel himself bought it for a grain of sand. Who can buy it for a lower price? Maria offers to pay only with her purity and love. TV adaptation of Schildt's 1922 stage play.
