Following in her firefighter father Michael Ramsey's footsteps, Jazz Ramsey always knew she wanted to go into search and rescue. Following his accidental on-the-job death which devastated both her and her mother Andy, Jazz instead opened Ramsey's K-9 Institute where she trains dogs to work in various aspects of first response. While Jazz, along with her current dog trainee Zeus, is providing a demonstration at Astor Academy for Girls, her alma mater where Sarah Carrington, her longtime best friend starting from those school days, has recently become the principal, Zeus discovers a dead body in a not often used and locked part of the school, which only Sarah has key access. From personal effects found on the otherwise unidentifiable body, Jazz and Sarah believe the victim is Bernadette Quinn, who had long taught at the school up until a year ago when legal action was brought upon by a parent, Asher Manard, for what he considered Miss Quinn's unusually ardent fixation on his daughter, Maddie Manard, the situation which ultimately led to Miss Quinn resigning. There was no love lost between Sarah and Miss Quinn stemming back to when Sarah and Jazz were students in Miss Quinn's class. Sarah's sentiments were also those of many of the students, past and present, in she being old fashioned in her strict ways, that sentiment which does not seem to be shared by Jazz and Maddie. In the process, Jazz is reunited with her ex-boyfriend, Police Detective Nick Kolesov, who is leading the investigation.
