Only a premiership could have made this a better year for Port Adelaide. A lot went right in 2002. Finishing minor premiers, after losing the first two games was a mighty achievement and so was the club's first ever finals win against 2000 premiers, Essendon. All Australian selection for Matthew Primus, Warren Tredrea, Brett Montgomery and Brownlow runner up Josh Francou highlighted the quality packed in every line of this powerhouse team. Along with these established superstars, Chad Cornes, Jared Poulton and Darryl Wakelin had their best ever seasons in football. Rated a flag favourite during the year, the season culminated in a pulsating clash with Brisbane that proved just how far this side has come.
