The artist John E Franzén belonged to the new realists in the 1970s, which can be seen in a series of self-portraits. He rode around California on a motorcycle during the hippie era, painting rusty Cadillacs on meter-sized canvases, and experiencing the Hells Angels. He then moved to Småland, in the south of Sweden, where he switched to painting landscapes, he wanted like the 19th century painters to capture the shifts of light by a lake.
